To speed up the simulation considerably, you can press the grey eye visibility button above to stop the screen updating.

Please note that this project uses real HTML elements which are pretty in code but not in performance, especially when you have 100s of creatures.
If I was doing this again, I'd be using a canvas which is more suited to having things moving around. You can see an unfinished rewrite at /LIFE2/.
